Scientist to Mama

FAQs

I offer prenatal consults during pregnancy, lactation induction consults if you are adopting, or wanting to make milk for a baby carried by a partner, traditional lactation consults for anyone seeking support after having or adopting their baby, and so much more! Please see my Services & Fees page for more information and a full list of services.

There are many types of lactation support professionals, with varying training and education. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are considered the gold standard in clinical care, and for support and education on all stages of human lactation. We are a part of your healthcare team, with specialized knowledge in breastfeeding and infant feeding.

IBCLCs have extensive training, education, must complete clinical hours, and are required to sit for and pass a credentialing exam, administered by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

We carry malpractice insurance, adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct and are subject to disciplinary action.

Ongoing education is so important when it comes to assisting families with feeding challenges! Continuing education is required, and re-certification occurs every five years.

As an IBCLC my goal is to provide accurate, evidenced-based information, education and care on human lactation and breastfeeding. It is important to get to the root of a problem, not just provide a solution. I take a holistic approach with the families I work with, and offer suggestions to support parent and baby’s overall well-being and feeding challenges. This may include referring to other like-minded practitioners, as well as modalities and options which are more naturally focused, when requested or preferred. Publications, available data and suggestions to discuss with your healthcare provider can always be provided when needed.

Please submit an Appointment Request on the website and I will reply the same day (or the following day if received after 7 pm EST), to schedule. Or contact me at (610) 745-4962.

You will receive a series of emails confirming your appointment with instructions for the visit, as well as an Intake Form, including a Consent for Care, my Privacy Policy and Payment Policy. All documents can be completed and signed electronically. If you have insurance, you will also receive a link to submit your insurance information (this is used only to verify coverage).

Please note, I can not attend a consultation without a completed Intake Form.

I accept Aetna and Independence Blue Cross (IBX) insurance, and am considered an in-network provider with both. Any co-payment required by your plan, is collected at the time of service.  I am an out-of-network provider with all other major insurance companies, and full payment for the visit is expected at the time of service. Cash, check and electronic payments using all major credit cards are accepted, as well as HSA/FSA cards.

If you have insurance, you will receive a link to submit your insurance information at the time of booking. Your coverage will be verified, and following the visit, we will submit a claim to your insurance company on your behalf for reimbursement. There is nothing further you need to do. This does NOT guarantee payment or a refund, from your insurance company. Additional fees or cost-sharing may be applied. You will receive a detailed copy of my Payment Policy at the time of booking.

Lactation consultations for cash clients, and those not covered by Aetna or IBX, are $195-$250 depending on visit type, visit length and if there are multiple babies. Please note, if you have coverage with Aetna or IBX, you may have a co-pay or other fee due at time of service, depending on your plan. Please see my Services & Fees page for a full list of all available services, descriptions and costs.

I accept cash, check, all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), HSA and FSA cards.

For all in person visits, I ask pets be moved to a separate room, as they can be protective of owners and new babies (but I do love animals).

For Initial and Follow-up Lactation consultations, please try to time it so the baby is due to eat within a half hour of my arrival (it is not a problem if this does not work out and baby needs to eat beforehand). I ask that there is a stable, flat surface for me to set my scale on (a table or clear space on the floor works great). Baby will be weighed, a feeding observed, and we will take a post-feed weight. During our visit we will discuss your intake form, medical/social history and cover additional details and questions related to: feeding activity, baby’s behavior and any parent symptoms and concerns. A detailed breast exam will be performed, as well as a detailed assessment of baby’s mouth. If you are using a breastpump and need assistance, we will observe a pumping session as well.

For all other visits, parent or baby’s intake form, medical/social history (if applicable) and concerns will be discussed, as well as the activities related to the particular visit. Please see a detailed description of each visit type under the Services & Fees page.

Visits are anywhere from 1-2+ hours. An initial lactation visit is typically 1.5-2 hours, and a follow-up visit 1-1.5 hours. We will take as much time as you need, but usually no more than two hours is needed. Please see a detailed description of each visit under the Services & Fees page.

Please see my COVID Policy page for details.

A $25 travel fee is added to any visit outside of a 25 mile radius from my home. You will be notified when booking, whether this applies.

Yes. As a graduate of the IBCLC Masterclass, I have extensive additional training and knowledge in tethered oral tissues (TOTs), infant oral motor function and pre and post-release care and rehabilitation. Families are provided with all available information and options, so they feel confident making decisions regarding the process.

No matter how simple or complex your feeding situation, we will develop a plan together that works for your family.
